Vodafone was today announced as the first principal partner for the COP27 UN Climate Change Conference being hosted in Sharm-el-Sheikh by the Egyptian government in November 2022.

As Principal Partner for Communications, Vodafone will be working alongside the Egyptian government to provide advanced telecommunications services connecting the COP27 UN Climate Change Conference and its visitors. In addition, the company will demonstrate how digital technology can address climate change, use energy more efficiently, deliver a more circular economy and increase food security.

At COP27, Vodafone will showcase how key digital technologies and services including the Internet of Things (IoT) can enable society to save energy, create cleaner cities and improve the efficiency of sectors like agriculture and transport.

Nick Read, Vodafone Group CEO, said: “The COP27 UN Climate Change Conference in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt is a critical opportunity to accelerate the urgent and sustained action required to address the climate emergency.

“Vodafone believes business success should not come at a cost to the environment, and our Partnership at COP27 will showcase the role our digital networks and services play in enabling society to address climate change and in delivering the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”

COP27 President-Designate, Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt welcomed Vodafone as a Principal Partner of COP27. He emphasized the important role played by global businesses in seeking a sustainable business model and supporting the agreed upon climate action. Minister Shoukry pointed out to the contributions Vodafone already undertook in preparation of the conference in Sharm-El-Sheikh and looked forward for the continuation of this support leading up to a successful conference.

Vodafone is working to reduce its environmental impact to reach ‘net zero’ carbon emissions across our full value chain by 2040, while helping business customers reduce their own carbon emissions by 350m tonnes by 2030. Vodafone is also driving action to reduce device waste and progressing against our target to reuse, resell or recycle 100% of our network waste.
