We caught up with Shameik Moore, star of the new animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse movie, to find out more about his character Miles Morales and the difficulties faced by young people trying to find the right path in life.

Shameik rose to fame in his early teens, starring in TV comedy series Incredible Crew and more recently The Get Down – co-created by Baz Luhrmann – successfully making a name for himself in acting, singing and dancing. Shameik recalls that from a young age his teachers told him he would never be a star, but support from fans, friends and family spurred him on to pursue his dream.

“I personally wasn’t supported at school about becoming an entertainer but my peers, like the kids that saw me dancing and that saw me on TV when I was little, they supported me…If you’re passionate about it, following that path might lead you to what you’re really supposed to do.”

In the new Spider-Man movie, Shameik voices Brooklyn teenager Miles Morales who is bitten by a radioactive spider and finds himself learning to be the new Spider-Man. Shameik calls it a ‘coming-of-age’ film because his character is unsure how to use his new superhero abilities and accept the responsibility that has been thrust upon him.

Shameik explains that he can relate to the film because “this movie is letting everybody know anyone can wear the mask…It’s very important for kids to feel like anything is possible when they put their mind to it”.

We gave Shameik Vodafone’s Future Jobs Finder test, to identify his skills and which digital career he would be suited to. His top results included multi-media developer, social media manager and sound engineer. Better known as Meak during his teens, Shameik ran a YouTube show called ‘Meak's World’, racking up an online following as a skilled content creator and social media user, which he confidently confirms, “I am a multi-media developer for sure”.

In a new global digital campaign, Vodafone and Sony Pictures have teamed up to lead people to the Future Jobs Finder, drawing on the movie’s central theme: that anyone can achieve their full potential with the right skills and support. This initiative will build on Vodafone’s global programme, What will you be?, which has committed to support 10 million young people to access digital skills, learning and employment opportunities by 2022.
