#Goldilocks: A fairy tale for the digital age

Vodafone UK and Andersen Press have launched a children’s book to help 5 to 11-year-olds learn how to use social media responsibly. The book marks the launch of Vodafone’s new Child Online Safety online hub and builds on the work of the Child Online Safety website, which has helped millions of families to get more involved in their children’s digital world over the past 10 years.

With new Vodafone/YouGov research revealing that many parents wait too long to speak to their children about using social media responsibly, the book and hub aim to provide vital support to families. As Helen Lamprell, General Counsel & External Affairs Director of Vodafone UK, says, “Social media can be a great way for young people to communicate, be creative and develop their digital skills. We know parents want to talk to their children about how to use social media safely and responsibly, but often aren’t sure how. #Goldilocks offers a fun, accessible way to start the conversation with younger children, who we know are increasingly aware of, and using, social media.”

#GoldilocksVodafone UK has partnered with Andersen Press to create a co-branded pre-edition children’s book called #Goldilocks. Aimed at 5 to 11-year-olds, it is a tale of the consequences of oversharing online.The much-loved children’s story has been revamped for the digital age by award-winning author Jeanne Willis in collaboration with leading illustrator Tony Ross. It’s a great starting point for conversations about being kind on social media and other digital ground rules.

Child Online Safety hub

Child Online Safety hubFamilies now have access to even more online safety advice on a new Child Online Safety online hub, created by Vodafone UK.The hub aims to give parents the knowledge and tools to talk to their children about the digital world and the challenges they might face online. Fake news, peer pressure and other issues are covered to help families live a better digital life.For parents who prefer hard copy, Vodafone’s seventh printed guide to digital parenting will complement the new hub.

Vodafone/YouGov studyThis new research revealed that the majority of parents have not spoken to their children about how to behave responsibly online by the time they start to look at or use social media.Almost half of children (48%) have been exposed to social media by the age of seven but most parents have not spoken to their child about being kind to others online by this age.The study found that parents are the first port of call for the majority of children for advice on their digital lives, with 93% of children aged six to 10 saying they would speak to their parents if someone said or did something to upset them online.
