Bullying can have a huge impact on a child’s self-esteem and mental health. With a recent survey revealing that one in five children experienced some sort of bullying in the past 12 months, it’s important that adults and young people work together to help prevent it. That’s where Anti-Bullying Week (12-16 November 2018) comes in.
Choose respect
This year, the focus of Anti-Bullying Week is how to choose respect over bullying and set a positive example – both online and offline. One of the key messages is that even if you disagree with someone or aren’t best friends with them, you should still respect them.
Stop, speak, support
As part of Anti-Bullying Week, the first Stop, Speak, Support Day takes place on Thursday 15 November. Supported by the Royal Foundation Taskforce on the Prevention of Cyberbullying, it aims to encourage young people to take three simple steps when they see bullying online.
Wear odd socks
Odd Socks Day is a fun opportunity for children to express themselves and appreciate individuality by wearing odd socks to school on 12 November. As children’s personality Andy Day who is a patron of the Anti-Bullying Alliance points out: “... encouraging acceptance of individuality at an early age can help prevent bullying later in life.”
