A global energy conundrum

Many analysts say global energy needs are expected to increase by a further 25% by 20401.

Achieving the required reductions in GHG emissions will be particularly challenging in the context of continuous economic and population growth.

Providing communications services requires significant amounts of energy. Every additional connected device gigabyte of data transmitted or stored represents a potential increase in energy needs.

There is a pressing need, therefore, for Vodafone and other communications companies to develop innovative approaches to minimise energy consumption in order to mitigate the climatic consequences of this rising growth in demand for our services.

Committing to reducing our emissions as we meet increasing customer demand

Reducing our emissions

Our 2025 goals

To reduce our GHG emissions by 50%

To purchase 100% of the electricity we use from renewable sources

Energy innovation in our operations

In recognition of our need to contribute to international efforts to tackle climate change, we have two targets that focus on achieving a significant reduction in GHG emissions.

We will meet our targets through further investment in energy efficiency initiatives across our networks, particularly in power supply and cooling, and a move towards purchasing 100% of our electricity from renewable sources.

Enabling our customers to reduce their emissions

We helped our customers save an estimated 2.9 tonnes of CO2e for every tonne of CO2e we generated through our own activities.

Helping our customers reduce their emissions

Through our Internet of Things services we are helping our customers to manage energy more efficiently and reduce their emissions. We estimate that over 31% of the more than 85 million IoT connections we operate directly enable customers to reduce their emissions, and we expect these connections to increase over time.

Our contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Our approach is contributing to SDG 13

SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

We are also contributing to SDG 7

SDG 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

SDG 4: Quality education SDG 5: Gender equality SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth SDG 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure SDG 13: Climate action

We believe we can have the greatest impact on five of the UN SDGs through our networks, products and services and through the work of the Vodafone Foundation.

Our commitments to reduce our GHG emissions, move to renewable electricity sources and improve our energy efficiency particularly support SDG 13, which is focused on climate action, and SDG 7, which includes a focus on clean energy.
