Vodacom was founded in 1993 – the first Vodafone Group company established on the continent. 

South Africa is the home of our largest business in Africa and the headquarters of Vodacom Group. Both are based in Johannesburg.

Vodacom Group provides over 45 million customers with mobile and fixed connectivity, payments and financial services, and Internet of Things (IoT) technology for businesses. We have grown to become a pan-African technology leader, driven by our purpose to create inclusive, sustainable digital societies across our global footprint.

In 2021, we launched VodaPay in South Africa, a smartphone app that offers users access to digital financial services as well as online shopping and lifestyle tools. The app brings together world-class consumer and merchant capabilities, supported by Alipay technology, and offers services ranging from loans, seamless QR and person-to-person payments, to entertainment and personalised shopping experiences with many more services on the product roadmap.

We are also supporting students in South Africa access education.  Our online learning platform, Vodacom e-School, allows students and teachers to access educational resources on their smartphones with no extra data charges, has already reached 1.2 million users in the country.

South Africa is one of the more settled, democratic and economically strong countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. According to the World Bank, internet penetration – the number of individuals using the internet – stands at around 70% of the total population. Our 4G network covers 97.9% of the population and we are making continued investments to reach more rural and remote locations, while also accelerate the roll-out of 5G.

On the map: South Africa’s national animal is the springbok, its flower the king protea, and a famous landmark is Table Mountain.
