What are space-based communications?

Always in contact

We believe space-based communications will brighten the future for everyone. With partners such as Intelsat, AST SpaceMobile and Amazon Leo, we bring pioneering satellite services to customers across continents. These systems – which include low-earth orbit and geostationary earth orbit satellites – enable critical services and help people thrive, wherever they are.

Moving heaven and Earth, together

Space-to-land connections are a giant leap forward in communications. Seamless switching between satellite and 4G/5G networks will bring wide-ranging benefits, from supporting disaster rescue efforts to connecting isolated locations, with great potential to boost economic growth and development.

Satellite world first

With our partner AST SpaceMobile, we've made the first ever space-based video call, from a remote area where there has never been mobile broadband before. The call, made in January 2025, seamlessly combined standard 4G/5G smartphones and satellite technology.

Striving for universal connectivity

Direct-to-device satellite technology will allow users in previously unreachable areas to access the internet on their phones, transforming isolated communities. It's the only satellite technology of its kind, offering a full mobile broadband experience and paving the way for universal digital connectivity and zero coverage gaps.

We marked the milestone at our new space-to-land gateway in the UK. The first such gateway in Europe, it channels all the signals from a user's smartphone via AST SpaceMobile's satellites and seamlessly connects these with our terrestrial network.

Vodafone, AST SpaceMobile and the University of Málaga open the doors to Europe’s first space and land-based network lab

Europe’s first research hub for integrating space and land-based mobile

Vodafone’s European Innovation Centre is home to the continent’s first research hub developing integrated low earth orbit (LEO) space and land-based mobile broadband services. This will allow customers to switch seamlessly between satellite and 4G/5G networks using their smartphones.

The hub, in Málaga, Spain, will develop the technology that enables conventional devices to connect to satellites, bringing a range of societal benefits from connecting remote locations to facilitating rescue and recovery after natural disasters. A satellite Network Operations Center (NOC) will also be developed to explore advanced analytics, coordination with terrestrial networks, and future technologies.

AST SpaceMobile and the University of Málaga are lead partners on the hub project. It is also supported by an initial grant from the Spanish Space Agency, and funded by Center for Technological Development and Innovation via the SATURNO project, part of Spain’s strategic PERTE programme.

What are subsea cables?

Deep connections

Subsea cables are a vital engine powering global connectivity. We have over 70 submarine systems connecting 100 countries, and we're dedicated to expanding this network to support ever-growing demand.

Breaking new ground

Three continents, one pioneering cable system. The 2Africa cable project links countries in Africa to each other and to Europe and Asia, boosting internet access and digital opportunities for billions of people. This new infrastructure will deliver faster, more reliable connectivity, helping boost economic growth and supporting sustainable development in Africa for years to come.

Vodafone's vast experience in subsea networks can be traced to its Cable & Wireless heritage, which began with the first telegraph cable landing in Porthcurno, UK, in 1870. Today we're still one of the world's largest investors in subsea cables and work with a wide range of leading organisations in the industry. With the 2Africa Consortium, we collaborate with seven international partners and the cable's manufacturer, Alcatel Submarine Networks.
