- Vodafone and AWS sign agreement to strengthen sovereign cloud services for German businesses and public authorities.
- All data is stored, operated, managed and controlled within Europe.
- Supports Vodafone’s strategy to deliver strong European cloud and connectivity services to bolster region’s economy and public sector services.
Vodafone today announced that it is strengthening its sovereign cloud services for German businesses and public authorities through a new multi‑year strategic collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Under its agreement with AWS, Vodafone will offer expanded cloud infrastructure services to enterprises and public sector organisations, ensuring that all data is exclusively stored and processed within the EU. From technical integration to ongoing operational support, customers will benefit from a comprehensive sovereign solution.
Today’s announcement builds on Vodafone’s recent acquisition of Skaylink, a leading provider of cloud service solutions in Germany and Europe. By using AWS‑certified cloud experts from Skaylink, Vodafone can advise and support organisations in their migration to the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
The partnership with AWS, together with the acquisition of Skaylink, advances Vodafone’s goal of empowering businesses, public authorities, and operators of critical infrastructure in Germany to adopt secure cloud services while meeting strict requirements for data sovereignty and data residency. They also complement Vodafone’s portfolio of connectivity and security solutions, including software-defined wide area networks (SD‑WAN), Security Operations Centre (SOC) services and firewalls, to protect corporate data, networks, and mobile devices against cyber threats.
The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is a fully featured, independently operated cloud solution built for European governments and businesses, offering robust technical controls, assurances, and legal protections. Its infrastructure is fully within the EU and operates separately from other regions, meeting strict German and European standards.
Customers can run applications entirely within the AWS Region in Brandenburg, Germany, benefiting from low latency connectivity while meeting strict requirements for data protection and residency. Those customers using the AWS European Sovereign Cloud will also be able to access the full range of AWS offerings, including the service portfolio, security, APIs, and innovations such as the AWS Nitro System, while benefiting from the availability, performance and familiar architecture AWS users already enjoy.
Hagen Rickmann, Director, Vodafone Business EU Markets and Türkiye, said: “A strong European economy needs a strong European cloud. Our continued collaboration with AWS allows us to deliver just that to our business customers and public authorities. We believe key pillars of sovereign solutions include maintaining full control over data and operations, as well as having the flexibility to choose which partners you want to work with daily.”
Stéphane Israël, Managing Director, AWS European Sovereign Cloud, added: “The AWS European Sovereign Cloud was developed to meet the strict requirements of the public sector and regulated industries in Europe. Through our collaboration with Vodafone, the performance of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud is combined with Vodafone’s extensive expertise, enabling customers in Germany to innovate securely and with full control over their data. We are very pleased to support Germany’s digital future together with Vodafone.”
