For Urban Aran founder Christine Murphy, innovation and tradition are not opposing forces, they are threads of the same story. Rooted in Ireland's rich knitting heritage, the Waterford-based brand has built a reputation for reimagining traditional Aran craftsmanship through contemporary design, creating knitwear that feels both timeless and relevant for today's customer. Inspired by street art, graffiti and modern culture, Urban Aran combines centuries-old techniques with digital innovation to bring Irish craftsmanship to new audiences around the world.
But as Urban Aran reaches new customers, expands its online presence and looks to grow internationally, digital transformation has become central to how the business operates. From design and production to ecommerce, customer engagement and marketing, reliable connectivity and digital tools are helping Urban Aran scale sustainably, without losing the authenticity that defines the brand.
Proving that small and growing businesses can use technology not to replace their craft, but to strengthen it.
For Christine, the opportunity is to grow the business while staying true to the craftsmanship behind every piece.
That balance between heritage and modernity shapes every part of the business. But it also creates operational complexity. It needs to manage everything from suppliers, stock and production to digital design, customer communication and ecommerce, all while maintaining the quality, consistency and sustainability that customers expect.
For a growing brand, that foundation should be non-negotiable. It means Christine and her team can collaborate more easily, respond to customers faster and keep operations moving smoothly as demand increases.
It also enables Urban Aran to modernise its creative process. Unwavering connection and a strong cloud solutions means the team can explore new digital tools that help them test, refine and personalise designs before production begins, supporting both customer experience and sustainability goals.
By combining traditional craft with digital design, Urban Aran is reducing waste, improving flexibility and creating more personalised garments, all while preserving the integrity of the making process.
The role technology should enable businesses to become more agile, more connected and more customer focused. With the right digital infrastructure in place, Urban Aran can spend less time worrying about operational friction and more time focusing on creativity, quality and growth.
It is a philosophy that reflects the future of many growing businesses: using digital transformation to improve efficiency, reach new customers and strengthen resilience, while staying grounded in purpose and identity.

The challenge: scaling craft without losing character
Urban Aran’s products are rooted in the traditions of Irish knitting, but its customers are increasingly digital-first. They expect products that are personal, sustainable, high-quality and easy to discover, explore and buy online. For Christine, the opportunity is to grow the business while staying true to the craftsmanship behind every piece.
“At Urban Aran, every piece is fully fashioned, built around traditional Aran stitch structures like the cable, the honeycomb, and the garter stitch. We pair this heritage technique with modern jacquard knitting to create contemporary designs inspired by street art and graffiti, so each garment carries both its craft history and a distinctly current edge.”

It needs to manage everything from suppliers, stock and production to digital design, customer communication and ecommerce, all while maintaining the quality, consistency and sustainability that customers expect.
A stronger digital foundation
This is where our partnership matters. Understanding Urban Aran’s mission, challenges and ambition means we can provide bespoke packages to match. It starts with reliable mobile and broadband connectivity that gives Urban Aran the foundation it needs to stay connected across design, production and customer operations. Beyond that, cloud-based tools help maintain visibility across workflows, all while our secure digital infrastructure gives the team confidence that business information and customer data is protected.
“We’re currently studying with Vorn, the Berlin Fashion Hub, and Zalando to develop our skills in CLO, a software platform that lets us design and visualise full patterns digitally before a single stitch is made. This means customers can see and refine pieces in advance of ordering, which reduces waste, allows for greater flexibility in sizing, and lets us create genuinely unique designs for diverse and changing body types.”

Better experiences, greater agility, sustainable growth
A strong digital foundation is also helping Urban Aran deliver a more consistent customer experience. As its online audience grows, digital marketing, ecommerce and production systems need to work together seamlessly.“It’s central to how we engage our growing online audience and shape our digital marketing strategy. Our process starts with hand-drawn designs, which we then translate using 3D knitwear technology, uploading each pattern to our Stoll knitting machines through a digital knitting platform called Create Plus. That combination of craftsmanship and precision technology is what allows us to deliver a consistently high-quality customer experience at scale.”
The role technology should enable businesses to become more agile, more connected and more customer focused. With the right digital infrastructure in place, Urban Aran can spend less time worrying about operational friction and more time focusing on creativity, quality and growth.
Innovation that protects authenticity
As Urban Aran continues to grow, Christine believes the key is to let technology enhance the business, not dilute what makes it distinctive.“Stay close to what makes your craft distinctive. We fully fashion every garment and oversee the sourcing of our yarn from start to finish, and that fully fashioned construction is itself a statement of quality and intention. We avoid cut-and-sew unless genuinely necessary. My advice would be: let digital tools enhance your process, not replace the craftsmanship that built your reputation in the first place.”
