For 63 years, the first goal scored in Germany's top football league, the Bundesliga, existed only in people’s memories. Now, thanks to the curiosity of our German colleagues in collaboration with AI production company PROMPTR, Vodafone has helped turn those memories into something that can be enjoyed by a new generation of fans.
On 24 August 1963, Borussia Dortmund forward Timo Konietzka made football history at Bremen’s Weser Stadium. Just seconds into the league’s opening match against SV Werder Bremen, he put his team 1–0 ahead, in front of 35,000 spectators, scoring the very first goal in the newly formed Bundesliga.
It was a landmark moment for German football, but one that no camera captured.
So, Vodafone’s AI experts set out to recreate the moment, relying on fragmented evidence and the accounts of those who experienced it. Combining human insight with AI, they aimed to make this lost piece of football history visible for the first time.
Human input remained essential throughout the process. Borussia Dortmund’s under-19 team reenacted the goal and the sequence of play leading up to it, providing the movement and detail needed for a lifelike recreation. Using these data points, Vodafone’s AI experts then guided multiple intelligent models to analyse the information and generate the imagery, gradually bringing the video to life.
The result is “The Unseen Goal”, a recreation that allows football fans to experience Konietzka’s landmark moment through moving images and sound for the first time. It fills a gap in German football and preserves the memories of those who witnessed it. Using curiosity, creativity and technology to turn ambitious ideas into real-world impact is the kind of innovation Vodafone pursues every day.
