Vodafone and SUEZ, a leader of circular and digital solutions for water and waste services, have joined forces to help more consumers and businesses conserve water by accelerating the global roll-out of a new technology solution to remotely read smart water meters quicker and more efficiently.
SUEZ aims to install more than two million of its advanced remote water meters by 2030 with the intention of using Vodafone’s extensive narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) technology. This will allow SUEZ to provide real-time and cost-effective remote reading of smart water meters for customers such as water utilities and local authorities through the enhanced connectivity provided by Vodafone and without the need to build additional infrastructure.
SUEZ predicts that effective remote smart water meter reading can reduce the volume of water wasted unnecessarily by up to 15% by better detecting leaks and monitoring usage. Having already installed 6.4 million smart water devices worldwide to date, the company now plans to build on this leadership position by extending its new connected service with Vodafone. SUEZ recently chose the UK as the launch market and plans to progressively roll out the connected service to its customers in France, Italy, Spain, and New Zealand.
In addition to allowing customers to analyse water consumption and predict peaks, the SUEZ service helps them instantly respond and alert consumers of any issues such as a major leak or shortage. SUEZ’s sensors also enable industrial companies to collect and analyse data from multiple locations to meet environmental targets, as well as improve productivity and profitability.
Patricia Villoslada, SVP SUEZ Digital Solutions, said: “The global partnership that we are launching today with Vodafone provides all our customers worldwide with a comprehensive and agile service that adds value in both technical and economic terms. Our SUEZ-Vodafone solution makes full use of NB-IoT’s potential in terms of meeting network performance requirements and reducing water consumption.”
Fanan Henriques, Director Vodafone Business International and EU cluster, said: “Vodafone is a pioneer and leader in connecting IoT-enabled sensors, for monitoring water quality and consumption to warning citizens of impending earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and wildfires. Our global partnership with SUEZ, a leader in the field of intelligent smart water meter reading, strengthens our position in this growing and important market.”
Vodafone’s global narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) network is ideal for connecting remote water meters and sensors since it provides a strong signal over wide distances and in hard-to-reach underground and insulated locations. In addition, the water sensors can operate independently on the same battery for more than 15 years without needing to be recharged. This is due the energy efficient nature of NB-IoT, and the fact that water sensors only need to transmit data at very low rates and don’t need to be tracked on the move.
