M-PESA – our leading fintech platform in Africa – was founded in Kenya 15 years ago, bringing financial services to many Kenyans for the first time. Today, M-PESA serves more than 52 million customers across Africa, enabling peer-to-peer money transfers, savings and microloans, and a digital shopping mall for smartphone users through its Super App.

Kenya is one of Africa’s more economically mature countries, with political stability and various economic reforms contributing to sustained economic growth over the past decade. However, the country still faces development challenges such as poverty, inequality and access to digital services.

Nairobi – Kenya’s capital – takes its name from the Maasai phrase ‘Enkare Nairobi’, meaning ‘cool water’, in reference to the river that flows through the city.
