Vodafone and Telenor are the first with live multi service IPX

Press Release

12 May 2016

VODAFONE AND TELENOR ARE THE FIRST TO DELIVER LIVE MULTI SERVICE IPX

Vodafone announced today that, together with Telenor, it has set a new global IPX benchmark by running five separate live services across a single IPX interconnect. The initial 4G signaling service, launched in 2014, has been expanded to now include 2G/3G signaling, direct voice, data roaming services and finally SMS traffic all interconnected via the joint IPX capabilities.

IPX creates a high quality, highly secure ecosystem to support a commercially sustainable transition to IP. Mobile, fixed and cable operators, over-the-top players (OTTs), content and application service providers can all use the same system architecture to bring new services to market quicker, more competitively and with guaranteed quality. It allows multiple services to be delivered over existing, privately managed IP/MPLS networks via a single connection.

“Both Telenor and Vodafone are leading players in rolling out 4G in their local markets. This direct IPX interconnect between our mobile groups secures a high service quality with a ‘roam-like-home’ customer experience for all Telenor and Vodafone subscribers. We are constantly challenged by changes in our industry and such partnerships enable mobile groups to adopt new technologies and services,” said Ronny Johnsen, CMO of Global Wholesale, the international wholesale unit of Telenor.

At present, 4G services are evolving at a rapid pace and this partnership secures increased 4G data roaming today. In addition, more than 460 million Vodafone and 200 million Telenor subscribers benefit from improved quality, because the services are directly exchanged between the companies. The IPX interconnect is essential to deliver VoLTE interworking and VoLTE roaming end to end.

Vodafone Carrier Services senior vice president for Voice Fred Schepens said: “Through this strategic partnership with Telenor, Vodafone Carrier Services is proving our commitment to delivering greater speed, quality, security and reach for our customers. Telenor was one of the first carriers to understand and embrace the opportunities from multiple services delivered via a single connection. Our customers expect easy to use, integrated, reliable, secure, and high quality services, which make a positive impact on their businesses.”

Telenor and Vodafone have developed their IPX platforms in full compliance with GSMA and i3Forum IPX guidelines, which is critical to secure full interoperability on all current and future services.
