The connected car is being hailed as the next big personal “smart” device. Automotive technology and data have always been intrinsically linked, but the current and emerging range of connected cars really shows how the ‘Internet of Things’ trend is an exciting reality.
When Mobile World Congress first began it was focussed on the emergence of handsets, but now the annual technology show encompasses anything that could be considered “mobile” - including tablets, watches and cars.
The emergence of the connected car is a very interesting development for the mobile industry. The potential to provide new services to consumers, enhance the driving experience and create new revenue streams is huge. From emergency eCall to infotainment services, mobile M2M technology is transforming the car into a truly connected environment.
Vodafone is a leading communications provider for the auto industry and we are back at MWC 2014 once again with our partners to show the potential of the connected car. Live demonstrations of Vodafone automotive technology can be found at the BMW stand where it is powering connectivity for ConnectedDrive services in the new electric i3.
We have also been shortlisted for ‘Best Mobile Product or Service for Automotive’ at this year’s GSMA awards. In 2013 we took home the top prize for a joint entry with BMW, and this time we’re up for an innovative project with Indian car manufacturer Mahindra Reva. The REViveTM smartphone app is designed to address the issue of ‘range anxiety’ - the constant worry for electric vehicle (EV) users of running out of charge mid-journey.
The EVs connect to Mahindra Reva’s servers using Vodafone’s M2M platform. If users run low on charge, they simply press the REViveTM button in the app. This releases a reserve amount of energy in the EV, allowing the driver to reach the nearest charging station. This is just one of the many next-generation services, enabled by M2M technology, that are helping drivers to stay connected, improve safety and drive efficiency. The awards ceremony will be held today at 14.30 Hall 4, Auditorium 1 so wish us luck!
