Satellite IoT

Extending the reach of cellular networks

Overview

No business can afford to be disconnected. The Vodafone IoT Satellite solution connects customer sites and assets even if they are located in areas with limited or no cellular connectivity, underpinned by the Vodafone Managed IoT Connectivity Platform.

Extending the reach of cellular networks

Whether you are in utilities, banking, retail, oil and gas, environment monitoring or farming, having continuous access to an Internet of Things service is essential.

But sometimes, business takes you to remote, rural or mountainous locations where fixed line or cellular access is limited or absent. In the United Kingdom for example there are 4,500miles of roads with no coverage and 29,000 miles of roads with partial coverage only. Satellite IoT can help connect these areas and also provide reliable back-up for business critical uses.

It doesn’t matter how many IoT devices your business requires or where they are, our satellite IoT connectivity solution can help you solve any connectivity or device management challenge related to cellular coverage conditions.

How does satellite IoT work?

Vodafone IoT in partnership with Inmarsat is offering the first global cellular and satellite IoT managed connectivity service. The partnership with Inmarsat, a leading satellite communications provider enables additional flexibility and coverage for IoT customers and partners – to connect all of their assets on a single contract without having to spend the time and resource dealing with multiple connectivity providers, or the cost and complexity of multiple roaming agreements.

The Vodafone Satellite IoT service uses Inmarsat’s Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN – mobile satellite network). The Vodafone Global SIM roams on the satellite network the same way as on any other mobile network and is managed using the Vodafone Managed IoT Connectivity Platform.

Managed IoT connectivity platform

The platform is a powerful and highly secure tool for managing your IoT connectivity whether it is fixed line, cellular or satellite. It provides you with visibility and control of your entire business process and devices in the field

Vodafone global SIM

The SIM in the satellite terminal roams on the satellite network as it would on any other network, connecting your remote device to the Vodafone Wide Area Network (WAN) and Vodafone Managed IoT Connectivity Platform.

Satellite network connectivity

Connect to Inmarsat's BGAN M2M Network for superior uptime and bandwidth options

Inmarsat BGAN M2M terminal

Inmarsat's terminals will be provisioned with our global SIM and deployed with line of sight to the Inmarsat satellite network, enabling connectivity to our global network

Satellite network connectivity

Thanks to its ubiquitous coverage and high network availability, even in extreme environmental conditions, satellite-powered IoT allows organisations to extend their services beyond terrestrial networks,to where they have remote connectivity requirements.

Utilities

Smart grid and metering and data collection from remote telemetry units

Oil and gas

Wellhead, pump and pipeline monitoring, equipment extraction and distribution monitoring

Retail banking

Connectivity for remote ATMs and PoS devices, backup for ATMs during disasters
