Vodafone Malta Foundation presents the International String Orchestra Festival

As part of the International String Orchestra Festival, the Vodafone Malta Foundation presents the Rotterdam Young Ensemble who will perform two concerts in Malta one on Sunday 27 April and the other on Tuesday 29 April 2008. This festival is organised in collaboration with the Embassy of the Kingdom of The Netherlands.

On Sunday 27 April, the concert is going to be held at the St Augustine's church in Victoria Gozo, featuring music by Bach, Haydn, and Mozart. On Tuesday 29 April, the concert will take place at the Manoel Theatre and the program will include compositions by Haydn, Stravinsky, Wagner, and artistic director Karl Fiorini's violin concerto featuring Emanuel Salvador as soloist.

The latter work also forms part of a project by the same soloist who has performed the concerto in The Netherlands, Portugal and Malta with coming performances in Italy, Uruguay and the UK. The concert at the Manoel Theatre will also include a new premier for 12 strings by a young contemporary composer who has won the International Composition Competition. The composer will be commissioned to write another work for strings for the Festival in 2009. For this competition, over 50 entries have been received from Austria, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Latvia, The Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Spain, UK and USA.

Born in 1981, Emanuel Salvador has already performed as a soloist and chamber musician in many important venues including St. Martin-in-the-Fields and Southwark Cathedral (London), Philharmonic Hall (Uralsk - Kazakhstan), Gulbenkian Museum, Rivoli Theatre and Bank of Portugal Hall (Lisbon), Príncipe Filipe Hall (Oviedo, Spain), Centro de las Artes Escénicas y de la Música (Salamanca, Spain), Sto. António Church (Rome) and Manoel Theatre (Malta). He has been awarded several prizes such as: first prize at Isolde Menges (RCM) and Beckenham Festival competitions; Barbirolli Memorial and Wolfson Foundation Award; second prize at Jovens Músicos competition; Honours Mention at Júlio Cardona International Competition - Portugal; Gulbenkian Foundation Scholarship (2000-2003), amongst others.

The Rotterdam Young Ensemble (RYE) consists of 26 talented young artists from seven different nationalities. Since its foundation in 2005, the RYE reached a wide variety of styles aiming to achieve the highest level and faithful interpretations of music from the baroque period to our days. Paying special attention on the music of our times, the RYE has given world premiers by young composers from The Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Japan, Korea and Mexico.

Both events start at 19:30. The 27 April at the St. Augustine's Church, Gozo is free for the general public whilst tickets for the 29 April concert at the Manoel Theatre are being sold at 20 EUR, 15 EUR, 10 EUR with a 50% discount for students on the presentation of a valid student card.
