Offaly and Wicklow celebrate

04 June 2008

Carroll and Glynn Chosen as Vodafone GAA Monthly Award Winners

Offaly hurler Brian Carroll and Wicklow footballer Leighton Glynn were named today as the Vodafone GAA All Stars Players of the Month for May. The players were presented with the prestigious awards by the President of the GAA, Nickey Brennan, accompanied by Vodafone’s Director of Marketing Carolan Lennon.

While Carroll joins a long list of Offaly winners of the monthly award, Glynn becomes part of an elite group of Wicklow players honoured in the scheme that includes current selector Kevin O’Brien and county panellist Tommy Gill.

Carroll was chosen after his outstanding performance for Offaly against Laois in the opening round of the Leinster championship. He produced an exhibition of free taking when scoring a total of sixteen points, four of those also coming from play.

From the Coolderry club, Carroll has become a key figure in the plans of new Offaly manager Joe Dooley as he re-builds the team. Son of the late Pat Carroll, a dual All Star and All-Ireland winner in the 1980s, Brian was an All-Ireland Senior Colleges winner with St Kieran’s of Kilkenny in 2001 and has won inter-provincial honours with Leinster.

As Wicklow created history last month by winning their first ever Leinster Championship match at Croke Park when beating Kildare, Leighton Glynn proved to be an inspirational figure as he led a very impressive attack. It was just the third championship win of his career.

A dual player with Wicklow, playing his club football with Rathnew and club hurling with Glenealy, Glynn has also represented Leinster’s footballers. He was a member of the team that won the Tommy Murphy Cup in 2007.

Speaking at the presentation, the President of the GAA paid tribute to the two players; "Wicklow’s win over Kildare was one of those great occasions that makes our championships so special and Leighton was a major force on that day. Equally Brian provided us with something very special when he played such a huge role in Offaly’s opening win of the campaign."

On behalf of Vodafone, Carolan Lennon, said the company was privileged to honour two more of the great talents of Gaelic Games. "Brian and Leighton have contributed handsomely to a great start to the 2008 All-Ireland championships and they are thoroughly deserving winners of these awards."
