Recognising the fundamental importance of Corporate Responsibility for its business activities, for the last 5 consecutive years Vodafone has published a Corporate Responsibility Report, the most recent of which covers the April 2006 – March 2007 financial year.
This year’s Corporate Responsibility Report places particular emphasis on environmental issues. Since it commenced operations, Vodafone has been implementing a well-rounded environmental programme and has been investing in energy / heat / cooling and lighting savings schemes and has also installed photovoltaic systems to power its base stations. Moreover, it also runs recycling schemes which, thanks to publication participation and the involvement of company employees, collected more than 70,000 mobile phones and accessories and 2.9 tons of household batteries for recycling from the start of the schemes in 2003 and 2005 respectively.
In addition, the Corporate Responsibility Report presents the company’s operating strategies and methods in the fields of the Environment, Mobile Phones - Base Stations, Health - Network Deployment, Access to Communication, Customers, Supply Chain, Employees and Social Contribution, the results of its activities compared to the commitments announced in the previous Report, and the targets set for the following year.
Vodafone also deploys mobile telephony technology to benefit the society in which it operates. In this regard, a telemedicine programme is being implemented on a pilot basis in 5 remote areas in Greece. In the field of Social Contribution, Vodafone is implementing schemes for children like the children’s road accident prevention scheme ‘On the Road Safely’ and since 2004 has been supporting the Special Olympics and all its sports activities taking place all over Greece. Moreover, the Corporate Responsibility Report makes extensive reference to other fields where the company is active as well as all qualitative and quantitative results for the 2006-2007 financial year.
Vodafone is one of the few companies in Greece which for the third successive year has used the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines in preparing this report (and in particular the third updated and stricter version of those guidelines) so as to present its results in an objective and transparent manner. The GRI guidelines are a tool enabling organisations to manage, measure and communicate their performance in the social, environmental and economic spheres. The GRI indicators have been developed to ensure that reports have a specific content to allow reports from various companies and from different years to be compared.
