Vodafone Greece has been presented with the ECOPOLIS 2008, Environmental Communication Award for the implementation and communication of the handsets and accessories recycling program. The award was presented to Vodafone Greece Corporate Affairs Director, Mr Dimitris Michopoulos.

This distinction is an important recognition of the handsets and accessories recycling program implemented by Vodafone since 2003, with the moto “Turn your mobile into a chair, a frying pan, jewellery…Recycle it”. Through this program, Vodafone Greece invites all of us to dig out of our drawers, closets, and office, old mobile phones, chargers and accessories and to dispose them in the collection bins available at all Vodafone Greece shops as well as in the 400 bins available at the Boy Scouts branches across the country. Recently, the program was expanded to Vodafone Greece business customers, with the participation – until today – of 33 companies. Up to day, Vodafone Greece has sent for recycling more than 90,000 mobile telecommunications products (mobile phones, chargers, accessories).

Vodafone Greece environmental program focuses on: a) Recycling programs, b) Energy efficiency and use of renewable energy programs c) use of environmentally-friendly materials. Vodafone Greece environmental programs are designed based on the results of the “Risk Assessment” and managed through the Environmental Management System, certified according to ISO 14001 and EMAS.

The ECOPOLIS 2008 Environmental Awareness Awards that were presented on June the 4th, at the GAIA Natural History Museum, are the result of an initiative launched 4 years ago from the non-governmental environmental organisation Ecocity. The purpose of the Awards is to promote and acknowledge the practices and increased environmental awareness of Scientists, Scientific Bodies, Municipalities, State Organisations, Companies, State Bodies and the Media.
