By sending a free SMS Vodafone subscribers can now easily receive updates on their mobile phone
Vodafone has provided the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki's (AUTH) Radiocommunications Laboratory with a special four-digit number (5025) to set up the HERMES SMS service as part of its commitment to providing direct scientific information on issues concerning how mobile telephony works.
From Monday, 8 October 2007 Vodafone subscribers in Northern Greece have been able to use the new HERMES SMS service. The new HERMES SMS service is an innovative system that briefs members of the public about the levels of radio frequency electromagnetic radiation emitted at the programme metering station locations.
This new, innovative HERMES SMS service is based on providing the public with information via SMS sent and received over the mobile telephony network. Any mobile phone user can use the service by typing the Greek word ΕΡΜΗΣ or English word HERMES and sending the SMS to the 4-digit number 5025.
The services is currently available for the 18 metering stations managed by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki's Radiocommunications Laboratory. The 18 metering stations are located in the Prefectures of Imathia, Thessaloniki, Kavala, Kilkis, Komotini, Corfu, Larissa, Magnesia and Halkidiki.
The HERMES SMS service will soon include another 28 stations managed by the National Technical University of Athens' (NTUA) Mobile Radiocommunications Laboratory. These metering stations are located in the Prefectures of Attica, Achaia, the Dodecanese, Zakynthos, Heraklion, Lasithi, Cephallonia and Corinth.
The HERMES Programme was set up in 2002 by the NTUA and AUTH and is a round-the-clock system for measuring and checking radio frequency electromagnetic radiation emitted to the environment from various sources such as radio and television station antennas, mobile telephony antennas and radar. Measurements are taken by fixed metering stations installed at various locations around Greece. The results of measurements to date are posted to the programme’s website: www.hermes-program.gr.
