Vodafone leading the way in mobile phone recycling for the last 5 years

04 June 2007

Collection bins located at 370 Vodafone stores and at the 400 branches of the Scouts of Greece

On the occasion of World Environment Day on Tuesday, 5 June, Vodafone is inviting everyone to recycle their old mobile phones, rechargers and accessories by placing them in the special collection bins at the company’s 370 stores nationwide, and at the 400 bins that have been put in place at all Scouts of Greece branches around the whole country.

Vodafone points out that mobile phones should not end up in the garbage since they are made of materials that could harm the environment and, moreover, the specific materials comprising them can be used to produce other items such as household wares. Vodafone has been implementing a recycling scheme since June 2003 even though back then it was not required by law, and since November 2005 the scheme has been extended to encompass the recycling of household batteries.

In addition to being run via the 370 Vodafone stores, the two schemes are also run at all company buildings nationwide. To date, Vodafone has sent more than 70,000 mobile telephony products and more than 2.9 tons of household batteries for recycling. Going one step further, in May 2007 Vodafone extended its mobile phone and accessories recycling scheme in cooperation with the Scouts of Greece. As part of this collaboration, 400 additional mobile phone and accessories collection bins were installed nationwide at Scouts branches.

This was get another first for Vodafone, since thanks to this move there are now more than 770 mobile phone and accessory collection points across all of Greece, which is the highest figure among private or public sector bodies. Vodafone’s environmental schemes are designed and managed via an Environmental Management System which has received ISO 14001 and EMAS certification.
