Vodafone and TIM Hellas are proceeding to extend the pilot operation of the national roaming service to prepaid customers after the launch of the service early in 2007 in Cephalonia, Ithaca, Kalamata and the Messinian Gulf area, as well as in Eastern Macedonia & Thrace, the Prefecture of Serres and the islands of Crete, Karpathos, Kassos and Antikythira.

Starting on 17 May 2007, the pilot operation of the national roaming service on Vodafone's and TIM's 2nd generation (GSM) networks is to be extended to prepaid customers, thereby offering seamless communication across all categories of subscribers to either company, who shall be able to communicate via the other company's network, if either network does not provide coverage.

A number of subscribers of Vodafone and TIM shall receive by SMS the settings required to upgrade their SIM card in order for their handset to operate in a national roaming environment.

The pilot operation of the national roaming service between Vodafone and TIM pertains to voice calls, text messages and MMS services, as well as WAP services on both companies’ 2nd generation networks. It also affords full support of the value added services provided by either network via 4-digit numbers and access to the respective Customer Service Departments. Automatic transfer to another network during a call (hand-over) shall not be supported by the national roaming service.

Let it be noted that the pilot operation of the national roaming service does not involve any cost for the customer, while the subscriber is to be charged by the network which he/she subscribes to on the basis of the package deal he has chosen to take out.
