06 September 2007

  • Cooperation with State and Regional Government Authorities for a common relief plan towards local societies
  • Fifty (50) “phone booths” for free calls to all national, fixed & mobile destinations in the SW Greece and the Prefecture of Evia
  • Employees’ “Volunteerism program”
  • Program of special 10 hours package of national calls for all subscribers in the affected areas per month for 2 months

Vodafone always dedicated in supporting the wider society through which it operates, and with key focal point to help the August fire blaze affected areas of the SW Greece and the Prefecture of Evia, will proceed in a series of long term initiatives and target to assist in the healing of the affected areas and offer a “breath of life” to the victims. Understanding the vital and ultimate need for non stop communication during the emergency situation that Greece suffered along with on-going attempt to support the network through its technicians, Vodafone maintained the integral operation of its network, as in any standard occasion, offering at first the feeling of communication security and secondly, the tone of hope among people.

Moreover, Vodafone with sole care to offer substantial assistance to the victims of the fire blaze, will contribute at first stage with a series of initiatives valued the amount of 4,000,000 € for the affected areas. The company has already started an open and systematic dialogue with all involved parties, State and Regional, asking them to provide their help listing all the noted needs of the affected areas and the consequent plan for reconstruction; this will allow Vodafone to plan a strategic program based on those needs. Following this pattern, and in cooperation with all involved Authorities will install “tailor-made” phone booths in the affected areas of the SW Greece and the Prefecture of Evia. Through this action, the totality of which includes 50 booths, all citizens in the area will have free access and free call to national, fixed and all mobile companies’ destinations.

The deliverance of the first booths, which were placed at the Prefecture of Ileia, in the Municipality of Zaharo and at Prefecture of Mesinia, in the Municipality of Andania,Desila, took place on Thursday 6th of September. The booths were delivered by Zaharos’ Mayor, Mr. Pantazis Chronopoulos, and by the President of Local Council of Desila, Mr. Pericles Nikas, with the presence of Vodafone representatives, technicians and a group of volunteer employees. The rest of the devices were given to members of the Local Authorities, the contribution of whom was both substantial and vital for the final selection and arrangement of the booths’ placement. The installation and activation of all 50 booths will be concluded by the end of September, while the company will keep them active, for an initial time period, until January 2008.

Beyond all the above, and as a minimal gesture of help and assistance from Vodafone and its people, a special bank account will be opened in Alpha Bank; all employees will be able to offer their contribution and then, in coordination with the Greek Red Cross, Vodafone will proceed with the purchase of vital needed equipment suggested by the organization.

Additionally, Vodafone has given to the affected subscribers the ability to use 10 hours of national calls free of charge per month for the next two months. For this offer, effective since 31st of August, the subscriber will get informed for both the starting and ending date of the program. It is worth mentioning that, Vodafone through its annual Social Program will re-assess, re-position and incorporate additional initiatives towards the affected area of the SW Greece and the Prefecture of Evia. Finally, Vodafone Group Foundation will donate as a symbolic gesture the amount of £100,000 for the relief of the victims of this tragic fire blaze.
