5.4 tons of household batteries recycled on Vodafone's initiative

21 November 2007

In line with its Corporate Responsibility platform, Vodafone systematically implements environmental programmes which directly address the environmental effects of the company’s operation. Vodafone was the first Greek telecommunications company to introduce a household battery recycling programme, now about to end its second year of successful operation.

From the launch of the programme in November 2005 to this day, over 5.4 tons of household batteries have been collected. In Vodafone’s 380 outlets there are special used household battery collection bins, which can also be found in all company facilities throughout Greece, allowing people with an environmental awareness – employees, customers, and the broader public - to contribute in their own way towards protecting the environment. The collected household batteries are sent on by AFIS (Portable Battery Recycling Organization) to a plant in Germany which specializes in recycling.

Evidence shows that people have come to perceive Vodafone’s outlet network as a point where household batteries are collected and have responded to the company’s initiative, which brings a substantial benefit for public health and environmental protection. Batteries contain elements which, if discarded with refuse, will find their way to groundwater and burden the environment. For example, the amount of cadmium contained in nickel-cadmium batteries is enough to contaminate 1/3 of the water in an Olympic size swimming pool.
