Installation of high-speed VDSL network in two cities – Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom seek to gain experience with joint pilot projects

Düsseldorf, 23. December 2008. Germany needs a better infrastructure and in the 21st century there are few better infrastructural assets than high-speed broadband connectivity. Accordingly, Vodafone is currently testing the installation of VDSL high-speed technology in two cities in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg for the first time. When the project is completed, some 50,000 households will be able to enjoy high-speed internet access with up to 50 Mbps.

As Friedrich Joussen, CEO of Vodafone Germany and of Arcor AG, explains: "State-of-the-art infrastructure is the basis for business success and telecommunications infrastructure is the lifeline for every so-called 'knowledge society'. Particularly in difficult times such as these, investment in infrastructure is of crucial importance, since it holds the key to future growth. We want to see genuine infrastructure competition with the next generation of high-speed internet. That's why we will be starting work on a VDSL pilot project in Heilbronn over the next few months and then opening up our infrastructure to Deutsche Telekom."

In the course of 2009, up to 50,000 households in Heilbronn are to be provided with state-of-the-art broadband internet access with transmission speeds as high as 50 Mbps. A similar pilot project is being undertaken by Deutsche Telekom in the Würzburg urban area, with Vodafone contributing its own switching systems and fibre optic cabling.
