Vodafone Group Foundation Supports Disaster Relief Effort in Jakarta, Indonesia

The Vodafone Group Foundation has donated an additional £20,000 to Oxfam’s Emergency Relief Programme in order to provide clean drinking water and sanitation services to the victims of the recent floods in Jakarta, Indonesia. This supplements an ongoing contribution of £750,000 to Oxfam’s disaster relief programme, the 365 Alliance.

The floods, which are the worst to hit the city for many years, have left approximately 340,000 people homeless. Rising floodwaters have also cut water supplies and communications to parts of the city and forced medical teams to use boats and helicopters to reach many of those left stranded.

The Indonesian Government has permitted Oxfam’s regional team to assist certain parts of the city where there is urgent need. Oxfam are setting aside approximately £200,000 to support the relief work and Vodafone’s pledge is the first contribution Oxfam has received to support their emergency response to the floods.

XL, Vodafone’s partner in Indonesia is already supplying some communications assistance in the stricken area and the Vodafone Group Foundation’s donation complements this effort.

"The Vodafone Group Foundation has a longstanding commitment to disaster response initiatives," said Andrew Dunnett, Director. "Sadly this is the third time during the last twelve months that we have had to respond to a crisis in partnership with Oxfam, but we know from experience that working with them, the funds which we contribute will make a difference to the people who are caught up in this latest tragedy."
