As part of a European Commission review of EU data protection law, we filed a document titled The Future of Privacy – Vodafone’s Perspective. In it, we called for a fundamental change in thinking about privacy and data protection. This is Vodafone's first commentary in the important dialogue on privacy that is occurring at a national, regional and global level this year. We’ve called for a shift to evidence-based, accountable industry standards, based on general global principles, as the right way to ensure that the fundamental human right to privacy is protected. We highlighted the need for flexibility,as the world has changed over the 15 years since the EU’s data protection law was enacted – from major enterprise data controllers to the new digital world defined by user-generated content, social networking, web 2.0 and pervasive broadband connectivity.
