IBM and 4YFN Partner with AT&T, KPN, Rogers Communications and Vodafone to Deliver IBM Cloud to Mobile Developers
The Global Mobile innovators Tournament will challenge developers to drive change in key business areas by combining IBM Cloud with CSP Services
ARMONK, N.Y. XX Oct. 2015 –IBM and 4YFN (4 Years From Now) with global telecommunications companies AT&T, KPN, Rogers Communications and Vodafone, have joined forces for the Global Mobile Innovators Tournament. The tournament is designed to empower developers and startups to create mobile applications and cloud services that provide innovative ways for businesses and individuals to interact and make real-time decisions in a hyper-connected world.
The five and a half month global tournament will foster innovation by combining IBM Cloud and the Communications Services Providers’ services together to simplify mobile application innovation and drive commerce around the Internet of Things. By using Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) on IBM Bluemix platform as a service, developers in the tournament can more easily incorporate CSP offerings, including machine-to-machine connectivity, location services and text messaging, directly into their applications.
In addition to IBM Bluemix, participants will also receive free access to IBM IoT Foundation and MobileFirst during the tournament, allowing them to build and deploy mobile and IoT apps quickly and easily. The new DevOps experience in IBM Cloud makes it possible for creative professionals to realize their ideas, even without extensive programming backgrounds, and without investing in hardware and software.
“The growth in the cloud, mobile and IoT spaces is coming at a breakneck speed. We need developers who not only have the skills, but also the talent and passion, to get ahead of the industry and redefine how we serve the market,” said IBM General Manger of Cloud Ecosystems and Developers Sandy Carter. “Partnering with some of the industry’s top telecommunications companies, like AT&T, KPN, Rogers Communications and Vodafone, as well as the large international startup platform 4YFN, provides the developers taking part in the tournament with unmatched resources and the opportunity to demonstrate and grow their skill sets.”
“At 4YFN we support the entrepreneurial sector through different programs and events committed to forge links at the local and International levels,” said Aleix Valls, director of entrepreneurship and innovation at Mobile World Capital Barcelona. “We are proud to merge our vision with IBM to empower startup and developer communities around high-end accelerating technology, best-in-class IT infrastructure, an open culture of shared knowledge and a strong sense of global community. With this partnership, we will initiate a new hands-on learning and competitive experience”.
The need for these mobile application skills is being driven by the increase in the number of sensors, actuators, meters and video cameras connected to the Internet. Gartner estimates that by 2020, 25 billion devices will be connected to the Internet. Realizing the potential value of this massive new resource requires new ways of handling large volumes of data, performing advanced analytics and driving processes with the insights that can be derived. The tournament will give the participants hands-on experience with powerful, yet intuitive, tools that make all of this possible.
The sponsoring organizations share a goal of reaching out to mobile game changers all over the world who will transform the industry through the creation of advanced Internet of Things and mobility solutions in the fields of:
Each CSP will help select semi-finalists, who will be invited to a demonstration day. CSPs are sponsoring demonstration days in five cities around the world:
After demonstration day, semi-finalists with the top entry in each challenge category will be mentored by the associated telco sponsor as they move onto the finals at 4YFN, the startup event of the Mobile World Congress taking place in Barcelona Feb. 24-26, 2016. Each final team will have the opportunity to show their applications on the global stage in Barcelona, while networking with other entrepreneurs and financiers focused on the mobile industry. A global champion in each challenge category will have the opportunity to join IBM Cloud’s Global Entrepreneur Program and receive $120,000 in credits for use on IBM Bluemix or IBM Cloud infrastructure.
This tournament provides an unmatched opportunity for some of the leading technology and networking companies in the world to meet and engage the innovators that step up to build and showcase their skills through the program and, potentially, to identify commercially viable applications that could be the basis for new business relationships after the Tournament concludes. The deadline for entries is Nov, 16.
Registrations will remain open from now until Nov. 16, the deadline to submit the final projects to be eligible for the semi-finals.
