Vodafone is a trusted connectivity partner with many successful automotive customers. We help them enhance existing in-car services for new vehicle owners. Our customers seek our expertise and technical competency and in turn we offer a truly connected car experience, on top of the existing services offered today through Vodafone Automotive by enabling a car to become a Wi-Fi hotspot. However, the hurdle, which is often seen through the introduction of new technologies; was a hurdle that neither our customers nor Vodafone could not foresee - the changing landscape for telecommunication consumers in Europe. The continued threat, caused by extremists, is filtering into the everyday life. Where once there was freedom to buy a pre-paid mobile SIM and to walk out of the store without any questions asked have gone.
As a Product Manager I work closely with each country to present the product to a wide audience on how a consumer can successfully and legally register for an active Wi-Fi hotspot, which allows the driver and passengers to use the connectivity. Our Internet in the car is a pre-paid connectivity product – positioned as a Wi-Fi product – but categorised differently in every market by the nature of the use of the SIM card.Vodafone’s internet in the car service is live across 17 countries in Europe with a further 5 more to be added by Autumn with 3 Automotive customers and will be extended to other Car Brands as the service evolves.
Senior leaders within various network operators are educated on how a vehicle becomes a Wi-Fi hotspot. The due diligence performed during product development ensures that automotive customers can have a legally compliant service offering for consumers – be it a car or a scooter (Bolt AppScooter launching in 2018).
