The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most widely anticipated technology revolutions of the last decade and machine-to-machine (M2M) is the technology that enables it. Within the next three years, 75 per cent of organisations expect to have a strategy for implementing M2M on projects that will directly impact consumers.

From connected home concepts to intelligent energy devices which learn and understand your own individual schedule, the IoT is moving beyond industry, and into new applications, products, and services which create personalised experiences that reach deep into consumers’ lives. In a recent example of this kind of experience, Vodafone’s M2M SIMs have provided worldwide coverage for a new system of remote sensors, from well-being company Lively, that offers safety and security for families by enabling them to check that their older relatives are eating and taking appropriate medication.

With its growing use, people are becoming familiar with M2M and the Internet of Things and, as a result, are increasingly receptive to the technology. Customer satisfaction is the key to successfully taking the technology to the next level, and personalisation of a user’s experience is a core part of achieving this. These experiences should be reliable, but exhilarating and customised to the individual.

At this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Vodafone showed consumer experiences which bring to life the “Internet of Me”.  We are already helping B2C sectors like consumer electronics, consumer goods, retail, automotive and technology innovate new products and find exciting ways to engage consumers.

  • Our Connected Life demonstration will give insight into how M2M can be personalised to an individual’s interests, career or lifestyle by showcasing our joint capabilities across areas covering mHealth, Connected Worker and digital lifestyle.
  • With one of our connected car partners Porsche, we will be demonstrating Porsche Car Connect – enhancing the individuals driving experience through telematics customised to their driving behaviour.
  • Our partnership with Admirror allows advertisers to upload personalised content tailored to the person using the device.

Our commitment to enabling partners to achieve these successes has made Vodafone a leader in M2M, with independent analysts Gartner and Machina Research recognising our position in the industry. Recently, we announced that Vodafone will become the first operator to develop the proof of concept for the Cellular Internet of Things, a new low-cost technology dedicated to connecting devices - from water meters to fire extinguishers - that have lower demands for power and bandwidth.
