NEW VODAFONE SUBSEA CABLE SYSTEM LINKS INDIA TO MIDDLE EAST AND SINGAPORE
Vodafone announced today that the new Bay of Bengal Gateway (BBG) submarine cable linking Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East is now live and carrying traffic. BBG is one of the first ever dark fibre systems to be lit at 100G and provides additional capacity and lowest latency connectivity that spans 8,100 kilometres and connects landing points across India, Singapore, Malaysia, Oman, UAE, and Sri Lanka.
Vodafone, as the lead investor, was joined by five other top communications companies to build the subsea cable system. This system will provide direct connectivity to Vodafone’s European and India networks and is designed to provide onward connectivity with its other major submarine and terrestrial cables linking the USA, Europe, Asia, Middle East, and Africa.
With a new direct landing site in Mumbai for Vodafone, this increase in capacity and capability in India enables the company to meet the exponential growth in data demands fuelled by the expansion of 3G and 4G mobile data services in the Indian market.
BBG is one of the newest systems to adopt the more innovative and cost effective digital line section (“DLS”) based business model. This means that the capacity is better utilized as there is no need to reserve a portion of the total capacity for congestion. It also allows each member of the Consortium to carry out an upgrade when required and where required.
Vodafone Carrier Services Chief Executive Brian Fitzpatrick said; “This is a great achievement for Vodafone and for the BBG Consortium, and demonstrates our commitment to the Indian market to meet the high bandwidth demands. It brings new options and alternatives and secures a much-needed increase in capacity for one of the most exciting and fastest growing markets for us. I believe that this will prove to be a success for all involved.”
BBG is owned by the consortium of global telecom operators that includes Dialog Axiata of Sri Lanka, Etisalat of the United Arab Emirates, Omantel of the Sultanate of Oman, Reliance Jio Infocomm of India, Telekom Malaysia Berhad of Malaysia, and Vodafone of the United Kingdom.
