According to our recent CIO Pain Points survey, mobile working for CIO’s means a 44% increase in employee productivity and 43% increase in staff morale, meaning your organisation can become truly global and flexible.
However, with opportunity there comes the need for effective controls, as mobile working, if not implemented properly, can lack transparency and become difficult to administer. Top concerns include high roaming and data costs, with two-thirds of CIOs under pressure to cut their telecoms expenditure, every device needs to add value. For example, with traditional billing, it takes weeks and sometimes months before misuse is detected.
Vodafone Telecoms Management, or VTM, is designed to provide the transparency needed by providing one view of your entire telecoms estate, both fixed and mobile, giving you the information you need to become more efficient. The idea is to put CIOs and CFOs in the driving seat, with easily accessible information about everything from billing to money-saving tariffs, device approvals and security. With three-quarters of businesses now reporting significant staff interest in mobile working, and 71% of CIOs seeing mobile spend increasing, the need for clarity is vital.
Defragment your telecoms
So, where to start? Evaluation is essential, because it can be easy to lose track of where your telecoms spend is going. At present, 68% of CIOs can’t identify rogue spending in time to stop it. A typical problem is when a handset is transferred to a new starter: failing to match the old tariff to the new user’s actual needs is likely to result in unnecessary expense that could take months to identify. With corporate staff turnover of between 5 and 10% a year, problems soon mount up.
“Clients need a helping hand to understand what they’ve got across the globe, so the real power of VTM is providing you with complete visibility and control,” says Nick Webb, Head of Solutions at Vodafone Global Enterprise. “This brings it all back together again.”
Growth also creates its own challenges. “Where companies have expanded into new markets, they tend to source locally,” says Nick. “There are different divisions all operating on different policies, with different networks and tariffs. It can become an absolute nightmare. Being able to identify the structure generates efficiencies. Potential savings are significant, typically as high as 20%.”
Instant big picture
So, what is VTM? “It’s a comprehensive evaluation of your mobile, fixed handsets and data networks,” explains Nick. “It covers any network, not just Vodafone: we review every other carrier that you may be with.” Essentially, VTM helps control spiralling costs through three steps: Cost Management = Cost Efficiencies = Cost Savings.
Visualisation tools are a key part of the offering. Clients get access to Vodafone’s acclaimed administrator portal which provides control of operations, including the ability to drill down into individual usage to combat rogue spending.
“Once we’ve established a clear structure of where the savings are, we put all the information, including cost codes, into the VTM portal,” says Nick. “Typically, access is provided for CFOs and CIOs – they’re the ones wanting a quick snapshot from the dashboard.”
VTM is already used by businesses and the solution continues to evolve to meet new customer needs. Development of a ground-breaking VTM app is now well advanced. There are plans to extend the VTM offering with a new entry-level capability so even more businesses can reap the benefits of better visualisation and control.
In the pipeline
Taking transformation to a new level, with the creation of a VTM app for smartphones and tablets The new app, currently being developed by Vodafone’s innovation team, will highlight how enhanced user experience and ease of use can transform the way communications are managed. This is all achieved using an attractive touchscreen interface that everyone can understand. The prototype is already being trialled by two key customers.
“You simply open the application, check your savings, orders and approvals. Perfect. Then get back to business,” says Juan-Jose Juan, Global Head of Enterprise Innovation at Vodafone Global Enterprise. “Complexity within telecommunications has become overwhelming. We believe our customers should not have to spend more than 30 seconds to find out what’s going on.”
The new app will complement the existing VTM administrator dashboard, with targeted, relevant information that’s available anywhere, on any mobile device. Transform will be tracking the progress of the VTM app in the coming months – so watch this space!
