We talk a lot about the ways that the Internet of Things (IoT) will have a significant impact on society and change the way that companies do business. It’s one of the main reasons why IDC predicts the market for newly connected IoT products and devices to jump to $2.2 trillion by 2020. However, if we look around us we can already find great examples of ways that IoT is already disrupting our world.
A recent article in Entrepreneur called out nine specific ways that IoT is disrupting things today, but let’s look at a few:
Replenishment – Many vendors are already using IoT to understand when they need to refill a product or when a consumer may need a delivery of a replacement item. Vodafone’s Connected Cabinets is a great example of how IoT is affecting replenishment. One of the benefits of the Connected Cabinet is that it can track the weight of a cabinet which helps companies understand how much inventory is in stock or if it needs to be refilled. Health and well-being – IoT is already helping people track their health and understand what they need to do to stay healthy. For example, Boston Scientific has incorporated the Vodafone global SIM into mobile devices, allowing patients to send information on cardiac health and other vital signs to their doctors from their home. This allows patients to ease the transition from hospital to home after a procedure.
